CCG Strategies Q&A Blog: To-the-Point Answers to Common Leadership and Management Consulting Questions
What are the qualities a leader needs?
It's a common question that many business professionals ask.
We're going to answer in less than 30 seconds.

Short Answer: There are no set qualities that equate to effective and efficient leadership. Leaders have set expectations: they must create strategic visions, elicit confidence from others, and manage projects and people. The personality traits required to complete these three objectives can vary, but the outcome should always be the same.
Long Answer: Leadership, and the qualities required to lead, have always been argued about. Many social scientists argue that the main objective of a leader is to influence and elicit confidence from their employees, stakeholders, and peers.
To do this, leadership archetypes, like the People-Oriented, Task-Oriented, or Transformational Leader, were created as a guidebook for leaders to influence and elicit confidence. The issue with those archetypes is that they are void of the individuality that is found within the population of people who should hold leadership positions.
People are complex. One set of personality traits does not immediately convert to effective or efficient leadership. While understanding leadership archetypes can be helpful, they are not a direct line to leadership perfection.
There is no shortcut to good leadership.
Those who are called to lead should have a strong understanding of what they bring to a position and then leverage those skills to achieve the main leadership objectives: creating strategic visions, eliciting confidence from others, and managing projects and people.
